Finally, it’s that time of the year again! The holidays are upon us, bringing with them a sense of contemplation. It’s time to rejuvenate, draw new plans and savour your favourite food! While the party may last long, it will also bring on new challenges. The holiday season is likely to disrupt your fitness routine, thus, making it imperative to master the art of balancing. Following are a few tips to help you stay focused and maintain balance:

Stay focused

It’s easy to lose sight of one’s fitness goals and get carried away during the festive season. Thus, staying focused and reminding yourself of all the hard work you’ve put in and sacrifices you’ve made will go a long way in ensuring you have a balanced approach. Do the small things right and stick to your routine. If you do so, you will not feel guilty about indulging in some extra pudding!

Make every opportunity count

Managing your regular workout routine in the midst of all the shopping, parties and visits is indeed challenging. Though you will feel like you don’t have enough time to exercise, there is always some time to squeeze in a quick workout. While shopping, some extra rounds of the mall are also a good option to keep the fitness tracker going.

Don’t stress about those extra calories

Manage your stress and avoid unnecessary complications. Don’t be too hard on yourself even if you get carried away on a couple of occasions. Yoga and meditation are great ways to calm your nerves and keep you mentally fresh. Do not press the panic button even if you miss your fitness routine a couple of times during the holidays. Make up for it when you have the time.

Have a balanced approach

The joy of spending time with loved ones is unparalleled. In today’s busy times, it is often difficult for family and friends to get together regularly. Holidays are, thus, special. It is that time of the year when you get to cherish your bonds. Manage your time and have a balanced approach towards celebrating with your loved ones and dedicating some time to exercising. If you are unable to spend long hours, breaking up the exercise routine into small parts to be performed throughout the day.

Show your creativity

Neither a busy travel schedule for the holidays nor a move to new surroundings should deter you from getting creative. Always keep your workout kit, yoga mat or your favourite pair of running shoes around. All these things are easy to carry and will keep you from skipping your fitness routine. Also, exercises like squats, push-ups, sit-ups, dips, etc., should be easily manageable regardless of the place and time.

Make the most of seasonal activities

Every season has something to offer in terms of activities. The winter holidays are great for trying some mountain sports like skiing, sledding, snowboarding, snowmobiling, ice skating, etc. Plan a holiday to a ski station, and you can experience these sports while rejuvenating from your busy work schedules. For the summer holidays, the list of activities is unending. While swimming is a popular choice, you can try camping in the woods or play a round of golf as well.

Drink the right fuel

Heavy meals along with a wide variety of sweets are the flavor of the holiday season and worth savouring. Make sure you add the appropriate type of fuel that will help with your workouts as well. You can stick to your regular protein shakes or try smoothies that are full of nutrients and flavour. Fibre–the nutrient that aids digestion–is an essential element of smoothies. Find a balance between green vegetables, carbs and proteins to keep your energy levels up.

Sleep well

Long days and unending nights can take a heavy toll on the body. The hard work you’ve put in for months can come undone due to a few weeks of indiscipline. Getting enough sleep is a major hurdle to overcome during the holiday season. Ensure you sleep well to keep your mind and body fresh.

While we all look forward to an exciting holiday season, remember that it is also a great time to allow your body and mind to unwind. Dedicating some time to your fitness regime without compromising on the celebrations will go a long way in ensuring a fruitful holiday period filled with happiness sans guilt.
